Auslan 102: Conversation is designed for learners who have completed Auslan 101 or have a basic understanding of Auslan and are ready to take the next step. This course helps you move beyond single words and short phrases into full conversations on everyday topics.

You’ll explore real-life scenarios such as talking about the weather, making travel plans, discussing hobbies, and describing daily routines. With each topic, you'll expand your vocabulary, learn to ask and answer questions, and engage in longer, more natural conversations.

This course also introduces key grammatical elements of Auslan, including the use of signing space, placement, and facial expressions (non-manual signals) to add meaning and clarity. These skills are essential for developing fluency and communicating with greater accuracy.

Delivered by Deaf Auslan trainers, this course blends cultural insight with practical application. Through interactive activities, group work, and peer-to-peer practice, you’ll build the confidence to use Auslan in social and community settings with ease.

Overview

Building on the foundational skills from Auslan 101, this program is designed to enhance conversational fluency and increase confidence using Auslan in broader, everyday situations.

The course focuses on five core themes—weather, transportation, enhanced number usage, interests and activities, and social conversation strategies. You’ll learn to:

  • Engage in extended dialogue

  • Ask and answer a range of conversational questions

  • Apply Auslan grammar including signing space, placement, and non-manual features

  • Communicate clearly and naturally in social, work, and public contexts

1. Weather

  • Learn to describe and ask questions about a variety of weather conditions, using both vocabulary and expressive features.

2. Transportation

  • Discuss modes of transport, give and receive directions, and describe travel routines.

3. Enhanced Numbers

  • Build confidence using numbers up to 100 in context, including for age, dates, and money.

4. Interests and Activities

  • Discuss your hobbies, describe personal interests, and explore time-related phrases and routines.

5. Basic Social Conversations

  • Learn strategies for fluid conversation, including eye gaze, turn-taking, and use of facial expressions.
